  3. I wish it were so simple. If God wanted us happy on our material Earth, He would have removed the animal nafs from our beings. But he did not, so we, ourselves, cause each other to suffer. Each of us is born with the subconscious knowledge of “good” and “bad” and with the ability to love. But our souls (while holding those and other precious gifts) are inclosed in the eggshells of our hearts. We must grow, enlarge our souls during our life on Earth, this is why we are here. We have to break the shell, and it is very painful. Our souls emerge bleeding, covered in open wounds, with our skin stripped, our limbs broken. Pain is the driving force for the growth of our souls. One can not experience empathy for others until she shares their pain in her soul, so we must learn to hurt first, only then we can help others in their pain. Trying to avoid suffering is against God’s intentions, we must embrace them, we must learn to feel grateful for them, because they force our souls to grow big enough to be able to reach our Maker. We must live and work productively, trying to do good no matter the pain and ingratitude. Reaching “death before death” is for the Prophets, but someone has to grow their food, to make cloth for their closing, to build roads for them to travel. Hiding from pain is as dangerous for us, as limiting Islam to the Five Pillars. Rumi credited Attar as one of the two human sources of his teaching, read both Rumi and Attar!!! These readings will not lessen the pain, but they will bring the gratitude for it into your being.
