In this third and final video of The Primer on Islamic Meditation, we explore what it truly means to deepen our connection with the Divine—and how this connection is both the purpose of our existence and the essence of our spiritual path.
We begin by grounding ourselves in the understanding that divine connection means to be present with our Lord—consciously surrendered, aligned, and inwardly awake. It is a state of sacred worship, in which we live not from the ego or self, but from the soul. And this is the true meaning of worship in Islam: not only outer acts of devotion, but inward presence and surrender. This is the state of ihsan, the spiritual excellence described by the Prophet ﷺ.
True connection requires presence. And presence requires transcending the self—what the Qur’an refers to as the nafs. It is the self that veils us from the Divine. It is the “I” that separates. The more we purify and transcend the ego, the more the heart awakens to divine presence. As the Prophet ﷺ used to pray: “O Allah, do not leave me to my self even for the blink of an eye.”
We are reminded that Allah is near—closer to us than our jugular vein. The barrier is not God’s distance, but our own heedlessness. And in a world that constantly pulls us outward—toward materialism, ego, and distraction—this path calls us inward. Toward remembrance. Toward surrender. Toward love.
To awaken to this divine connection and fulfill our potential as human beings, three principles are emphasized:
- Learn – Seek sacred knowledge that awakens and empowers.
- Practice – Apply that knowledge through regular, consistent action.
- Associate – Surround yourself with others who are also walking the path, as our environment shapes our state of being.
The Qur’an instructs us: “O you who believe, be mindful of God and be with the truthful” (9:119). And the Prophet ﷺ said: “A person is upon the religion of their close companion.” The path of divine connection is not meant to be walked alone. It’s a path of companionship, association, and sacred company.
We are also reminded that our potential for healing, wholeness, clarity, and peace has yet to be realized. We are only scratching the surface of what is possible. This is why the spiritual path is a journey of transformation. When we look within, we awaken. And through that awakening, we discover who we truly are.
To summarize: Deepening divine connection means embracing the path of spiritual excellence. It means striving to live from the spirit, not the self. And it means committing to learn, to act, and to stay in sacred company.
May this path lead us closer to our Creator, and may our hearts awaken fully to His presence and pleasure.
